What moves it up

Where the band starts
A Viking cooktop lights each burner with three parts: the igniter beside the ports, a switch on the burner valve that closes as the knob turns, and a module that makes the spark. On the older ranges in Viking’s service manual, one module runs a four-burner top and a char-grill model adds a second. One cracked igniter or one failed switch keeps the figure near the bottom.
Where it climbs
The oven pushes it up. Depending on its age, a Viking gas oven lights from a glowing igniter or from a spark electrode watched by a module that shuts the gas off when it senses no flame. Either part sits at the oven burner or the broiler, well away from the cooktop.
A glowing igniter can still be the fault: a weak one never draws enough current to open the gas valve fully. That is why an oven that lights late, or not at all, is tested rather than judged by eye.
