Flame Is Uneven Around One Viking Burner
Gaps in the ring of flame, or one side burning tall while the other barely shows, point at the burner itself when only one burner does it. What we usually find
- Most often
Ports sealed by boiled-over food or cleaner residue. It shows as dark gaps in an otherwise even ring, usually on the side of the burner that caught the spill.

A cap or burner head put back off-centre or tilted after cleaning. The ring is complete but tall on one side and short on the other, rather than missing in places.

Ports stretched or bent by a toothpick, wire or scraper, or a burner part that has corroded. Viking warns against widening ports, and a damaged part is replaced, not cleaned again.
Reading the ring
Watch the burner on a medium setting with no pan on it. Dark gaps in a ring that is otherwise steady mean individual ports are shut. A complete ring that leans, tall on one side and low on the other, means the parts under it are not sitting square. If several burners turn ragged at the same time, a shared cause is more likely, and that is a question for a technician rather than a reason to clean harder.
Cleaning without doing harm
Viking’s guidance for its sealed burners is gentle: warm soapy water, a soft brush or a non-scratch pad, and a thorough drying. The ports are sized holes, which is why Viking warns against enlarging or distorting them; a port forced wider trades one uneven flame for another.

Cap off on a cold burner
With the burner off and cool, lift the grate and pull the cap straight up. On Viking's current 5 Series ranges a separate ported burner head lifts off beneath it.

Soften the crust
Wash the cap and burner parts in warm soapy water with a soft brush. For cooked-on food Viking suggests a non-abrasive cleanser, not steel wool or scouring powder.

Clear the closed ports with a pin
Push a straight pin through each port that is still shut, keeping it in line with the hole so nothing is stretched. Viking rules out toothpicks for this.

Dry fully, then seat it square
Let every part dry before refitting. Keep any tabs underneath clear of the igniter, make sure the cap is level, and on 5 Series burners point the arrow towards the back.

Can Viking burner caps go in the dishwasher?
Viking says not. Its care notes keep burner caps out of the dishwasher and the self-cleaning oven, both for a better clean and to avoid rust.
