Long running is not always a fault
The compressor in Viking’s built-in refrigerators is a variable-speed design, able to run for long, quiet stretches at low speed rather than switching hard on and off. A soft, steady hum on its own says little. What matters is whether the cabinet holds its setting.
Running that never pauses through several ordinary days is different, above all with food softening, a warm feel inside the door or frost building somewhere. That combination means the unit cannot reach its target, and something is stopping it.

Look for a boost mode left running
A lit Fast Cool, Max Ref or Max Frz pad on a built-in, or Max Ice on a freezer column, means the long run is intended. Fast Cool lasts two hours, Max Ref four, Max Frz six and Max Ice 48.

Keep the grilles open to the room
A built-in keeps its machinery behind the grille across the top; a column keeps its condenser behind the kickplate at the bottom. Viking asks for ventilation openings to stay clear, so move trim, bins and boxes away from whichever yours has.

Look along both door seals
With each door closed, look and feel along the edges for a fold, a split or a corner that stands off the cabinet. Any gap feeds kitchen air in for every hour the door stays shut.

Give it one ordinary day
Viking expects longer running on a hot day, in a warm room, after a big shop or with the doors opened often. After a day of normal use with the doors mostly shut, note whether the running ever pauses.

Can I clean the condenser on my Viking myself?
It depends on the model. Viking calls the condenser on its 5 Series built-ins clog-resistant and maintenance-free in normal conditions. On a 7 Series column Viking recommends a clean every six months, the display blinks CL when one is due, and the coil sits behind the kickplate and an access panel. Does a Viking that never stops running mean the compressor is failing?
